The Athletic cancels dedicated West Brom coverage as Guochuan Lai promise made

The Athletic have confirmed they will no longer have a dedicated West Brom correspondent after Elias Burke took up a new role within the company.

The news organisation has provided dedicated coverage of the Baggies for over three and a half years, but The Athletic revealed on 26 March that would no longer be the case.

Despite there not being a full-time reporter covering Albion, The Athletic did say they would still be looking to find ways to cover the club, particularly Guochuan Lai’s ownership.

No surprise

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. The Athletic initially started with dedicated reporters for the 20 Premier League clubs, which did include West Brom. However, the Baggies’ relegation and two seasons in the Championship has clearly seen their relevance decrease slightly.

Covering a second-tier side doesn’t have the same impact as it does for a Premier League team. However, it’s good to see the news organisation make a promise to keep The Hawthorns faithful updated with Lai’s latest antics. There’s a significant cloud hanging over the club at present and supporters will be eager to remain updated.

West Brom

West Brom’s off-the-field situation is extremely concerning, particularly when so many EFL clubs have endured financial difficulties in recent years.

There’s a lot riding on Carlos Corberan’s side heading into the run-in. If they can somehow secure promotion, there’s a chance the financial woes in the West Midlands will slowly dissipate.

The sooner Lai provides answers, the better.

In other West Brom news, one Albion player has stunned his teammate with his performances in training while on international duty.
