Erik Pieters shares West Brom contract prediction, existing deal expires soon

Erik Pieters is confident of securing a new deal at West Brom, with the defender’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The former Netherlands international turns 35 this summer, but remains a key part of Carlos Corberan’s Albion XI. He joined the Baggies on a free transfer from Burnley in September 2022.

Pieters, who has made 27 Championship appearances this season, remains focused on getting promoted to the Premier League, but is also wary of his contract situation at The Hawthorns.

“I’m not going to lie, of course it’s on your mind, but the main key on my mind is to get promotion with West Brom,” said Pieters, as quoted by Birmingham Live. “I just know that when we achieve that, my future will be okay. I think I showed myself that I am not slowing down despite my age, when many people have talked about my age.

“I think when I keep performing how I have done, I won’t be worrying and won’t be in the same situation as last year. The main key is not to get a big injury, everyone knows that, but if you play thinking like that, you’re going to get injured, I believe.

“The key for me is to keep performing how I have done, keep getting wins and clean sheets with West Brom and the main goal is promotion. If you get that, because I’ve played so many games, I won’t be surprised if I signed another contract here – but I won’t be in the same situation as I was last summer.”

Pieters a priority?

Corberan has a busy summer ahead, with the manager set to be tasked with bringing new faces to The Hawthorns, regardless of how the current season finishes.

But also part of the transfer window is selling players and letting players go, with Pieters potentially falling into the latter category.

The defender has, however, certainly shown enough this season to gain an extension to his current deal, which would more than likely be for another year.

With over 200 Premier League appearances to his name, the experienced Pieters is not only a valuable member on the pitch, but also off it, helping guide the likes of young teammate Dara O’Shea in becoming a top-class defender.

Like Pieters, Corberan will also be prioritising promotion to the Premier League in the months to come, but the boss will undoubtedly have one eye on how he can improve his squad for the next campaign.
