Tony Brown fumes at ‘criminal’ West Brom defending in 3-1 defeat v Rotherham

Tony Brown was furious at the level of defending by West Brom in their 3-1 defeat to Rotherham on Friday (7 April), labelling it as “criminal”.

The Baggies were beaten by the relegation-threatened side to make it seven away games in a row without a victory, and all but ended their hopes of a finish in the playoffs for this season.

And while speaking on BBC Radio West Midlands, as quoted by the BBC Sport live blog (7 April, 14:16), the club’s all-time top scorer was angry about the way the team conceded the second goal in particular with Jordan Hugill netting two free headers.

“Jordan Hugill has had a free header once again to put Rotherham in the lead,” he said.

“Terrible defending from West Brom’s point of view.

“That’s two free headers he’s had for both goals – that’s criminal.

“Hugill must think it’s his birthday.”

Poor

This was such a huge game in the landscape of the season and it really was a must-win to keep the chances of finishing in the playoffs alive.

Unfortunately this wretched away form continued to plague us and the shocking defending that has been a problem for much of the season reared it’s ugly head once more.

The defending throughout the game was poor and we were relatively lucky to get ahead from the spot, but we never managed to settle and their attacking cycles were just relentless.

Ultimately the first half of the season really cost us a place in the playoffs, but we had a chance to get back into the race properly and the players have let it slip once again.

Now we know we’ll be in the Championship next season Corberan has to start working on his squad and his plans to ensure this doesn’t happen again going forward.

In other West Brom news, Daryl Dike was described as a “tank” while away on international duty.
