Don Goodman slams Karlan Grant after Jed Wallace did something ‘incredible’ in West Brom clash v Sheffield United

Don Goodman couldn’t believe Karlan Grant’s early miss in the first half of West Brom versus Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night.

After an inch-perfect cross was fired into the back post by Jed Wallace, 25-year-old Grant could only head the ball into the ground and over the crossbar with the goal gaping in front of him.

Ex-West Brom forward Goodman was full of praise for Wallace’s wing play but was less than impressed by Grant’s composure in the box while under pressure from Blades defender John Egan.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football during the first half at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night (26 April, 08:02pm), Goodman said: “Well [Grant] wants a corner but he shouldn’t be asking for a corner, he should be wheeling away celebrating a goal because this is an incredible delivery by Jed Wallace.

“You just wonder whether the Sheffield United defender touches it but nevertheless, it’s a poor effort and a golden opportunity.”

West Brom’s all-time top goalscorer Tony Brown agrees with Goodman.

Speaking on BBC Radio WM, as quoted on the BBC Sport website at 08:04pm, Bomber Brown said: “He’s got to put that away! What a ball from Jed Wallace. Just poke it in! A golden opportunity.”

Shocking

Remember when Slaven Bilic spent an entire summer transfer window trying to sign Grant from Huddersfield when West Brom were set to embark on a season in the Premier League?

Albion ended up striking a £15million agreement to sign Grant with the payments spread out over the course of his six-year contract.

Yes, six years.

It means Grant’s not even halfway through the deal he signed in October 2020.

The ex-Charlton attacker was signed as a striker even though he’s not a striker and looks way more comfortable out on the left wing.

Unfortunately, even though he’s being played in the right position, he’s still nowhere near good enough.

It’s unlikely that Grant will be sold in the summer because he has so long left on his deal and the worrying state of West Brom’s finances means they probably won’t be able to sign anyone better.

In other West Brom news, this Baggies attacker is likely to miss the remaining games of the season.
