West Brom scouting Max Johnston ahead of transfer window indicative of another year in Championship – Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Campbell believes that Carlos Corberan’s interest in Motherwell defender Max Johnston indicates he’s accepted West Brom will be in the Championship next season.
As things stand, a play-off place remains out of the Baggies’ hands as they need a miracle on the final day to qualify for the top six.
The Scottish Sun [03 April] reported that West Brom had sent scouts to look at Johnston, 19, a few weeks ago ahead of a potential move in the summer transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, Campbell, a Sky Sports pundit, said of the interest in a player who’s currently in the SPFL, “I think when you’re in the Championship, it’s a little bit different.
“Corberan as a manager will be saying, ‘If we go up, great, I could get him in, but if we don’t go up, I want to replenish the current playing squad so we’re a lot stronger for next season.‘
“You can do that in the Championship, but when you’re in the Premier League, it’s a lot different because you have to go most of the time and buy proven players.“
Johnston has made his name for himself this season for being an attack-minded right-back as he’s bagged two goals and provided three assists.

Apart from playing at full-back, the Scotland under-21s defender can also be deployed in central midfield as he has on a few occasions.
His current contract at the Scottish club runs out at the end of the season so the Baggies can sign him on a free transfer.
In other West Brom news, a defender may never feature for the club again after what happened and may even leave for free.
