John Mousinho shares Portsmouth update on ‘terrific’ Jay Mingi amid West Brom transfer pursuit

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has shared an update on the future of the “terrific” Jay Mingi, who is a summer target for West Brom.

As noted by Alan Nixon in December, the Baggies were watching the midfielder every week with a summer move to The Hawthorns on the cards.

The 22-year-old, whose Portsmouth contract expires next month, made 17 League One appearances this season.

“We are open-minded, that’s why we’ve kept the contract offer on the table,” said Mousinho, as quoted by The Portsmouth News. “That’s part of why we’ve kept that there.

“There was a conversation with Jay in January which went along the lines of ‘I think you’re a terrific player with a load of potential.’

“I think there’s still a lot of work to do to get him there and fulfil that potential. There’s a huge amount to work on and I think he knows that as well, but this is a really good football club for him to do that.”

Bright future

It’s clear that Mingi has a bright future ahead of him, but whether that is at Portsmouth or elsewhere remains to be seen.

Mousinho is evidently eager to keep the youngster at Portsmouth, but it seems he will have a difficult task on his hands given the reported interest from Albion.

The player himself has a huge decision on his hands in the coming weeks, with Mingi seemingly having the choice of staying at Portsmouth and progressing further or taking the opportunity to grow and challenge himself at a higher level with a move to The Hawthorns.

Baggies manager Carlos Corberan will definitely be adding to his squad this summer, as he attempts a fresh promotion charge having seen his side fall short of the Championship play-offs in the 2022-23 campaign.

Corberan will, however, have to move quickly in the summer transfer window if he is to persuade Portsmouth ace Mingi to come to the club.

In other West Brom news, Carlton Palmer has given his seal of approval to a “very good” Baggies transfer target.
