Leeds United want to hire West Brom boss Carlos Corberan as £2m release clause emerges

Carlos Corberan’s future at West Brom is in doubt as Leeds United consider hiring him as manager after a £2m release clause in his contract emerged.

The Baggies fought off interest from the Whites in February after they wanted to hire him when they sacked Jesse Marsch, handing him a new contract on improved terms.

But according to the Daily Mail (1 June) that new contract contains a £2m release clause that would allow him to leave, meaning the newly-relegated club have a direct path to bringing him in should they choose to do so.

“Leeds United have made early soundings about bringing Carlos Corberan back to Elland Road,” they wrote.

“The West Bromwich Albion boss is understood to have a release clause of around £2million and is emerging as a contender to take over from Sam Allardyce.”

Trouble brewing

It seems like a sure bet now that Corberan is going to ditch The Hawthorns to go back to Elland Road, and it would be hard to judge him too harshly for it.

He came in during a horror period and saved our season, taking us from bottom of the table scrapping to the brink of the play-offs without really being backed by the ownership.

With the club on a downward spiral, confirmed by the fact Ron Gourlay is leaving, it’s clearly a sign that things aren’t going to get better any time soon and Corberan will know that.

Leeds will be able to offer him a bigger budget, a better opportunity for promotion and that means a better path to get back to the Premier League quicker than he can here.

If he stays then it’ll be a miracle, but if Leeds come back again then it seems like a matter of time before Corberan will be gone.
