Carlos Corberan to Leeds United news emerges as West Brom clause ready to go

West Brom manager Carlos Corberán is among the list of coaches being considered by Leeds United to replace Sam Allardyce, but a potential doubt has emerged according to The Telegraph.

The Spaniard has done a tremendous job at the Hawthorns since his appointment in November despite just falling short of the play-off places this season, steering the club away from relegation trouble and turning them into promotion contenders.

The former Huddersfield Town and Olympiacos boss had been strongly linked [Sky Sports, 7 February] with the vacant managerial post at Leeds following the sacking of Jesse Marsch on 6 February, but he opted to sign a new deal to remain at Albion [7 February].

However, after Allardyce’s confirmed departure on 2 June, it seems as if Leeds United are returning to the West Brom table again, with Corberan holding a £2m buy-out clause, according to The Telegraph [3 June].

“It is thought that Corberán is one of the candidates admired by Radrizzani. The Spaniard is currently head coach of fellow Championship club West Bromwich Albion and is understood to have a £2 million buy-out clause he signed in February. The 40-year-old is a former assistant to Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.

“It remains to be seen, however, whether he is a big enough personality to galvanise Leeds following their relegation”, the report writes.

Nonsense

Corberan holds the hallmarks of a top football coach, especially after the job he’s done at both West Brom and Huddersfield and the fact that there are doubts emerging regarding his managerial personality to galvanise Leeds United is absolute nonsense.

When the Spaniard joined The Hawthorns in November, the club were an absolute mess, sitting in the relegation places, but to take them to within just a few points from the playoff places in such a short space of time should tell the Leeds bosses all they need to know about his prowess and personality.

Indeed, Corberan’s record as manager certainly makes for good reading, winning 17 of his 33 games in charge and also holding an outstanding home record at The Hawthorns.

And surely this latest doubt could spell some pleasing news for West Brom and their fans following the departure of trusted CEO Ron Gourlay.

Keeping Corberan at the helm should remain high on the club’s agenda this summer, but after all that’s gone on so far, it looks increasingly uncertain right now.

West Brom will need to find a way to give Corberan assurances he can improve the playing squad and that the club match his ambitions of pushing for promotion next season. Whether a Gourlay-lees board can provide those assurances is another matter, though.

In other West Brom news, Carlton Palmer has given his seal of approval to a “very good” Baggies transfer target.
