Carlos Corberan may be ruled out for Leeds United job in West Brom news

A fresh twist has emerged in Leeds United’s reported pursuit of Carlos Corberan as the Spanish coach does not meet their desired credentials, according to a Daily Mail feature.

It has been said that the Elland Road club do not want to pay compensation for their new head coach, which will come as a relief to the Baggies, given Corberan’s contract status.

That would pave the way for the likes of Scott Parker and Daniel Farke to be front-runners for the vacant role.

The Mail report detailed the figure that would be required to prise the Spaniard away from The Hawthorns.

“Leeds are working to appoint a new manager at the moment and want a candidate who has experience in the Premier League and Championship and ideally without compensation,” it said.

“That would rule out former coach Carlos Corberan.

“The West Brom manager, although well-known at Leeds from his time as a coach, has a release clause around £2m and has yet to manage in the top flight. Scott Parker, Daniel Farke and Patrick Vieira remain among the contenders.”

Relief

£2m would not go anywhere near replacing what Corberan has built so far, and the extent of the rebuild that would be required if a new coach were to come in.

Nothing is guaranteed but starting from scratch, again, isn’t an attractive proposal just now and the best option for the Baggies is to stick with their man.

The reported cooling of Leeds’ interest in Corberan will come as a relief to many, and given how his team performed last season, there should be relative optimism for what lies ahead.

He pulled the club from a lowly Championship position to a near-miss in almost securing a play-off spot, despite having to contend with a wretched injury situation in the final weeks of the campaign.

It speaks volumes that he is in the frame for the Elland Road job in the first place, beyond his previous links to the Whites.

If speculation like that continues, it means West Brom are doing something right.
