Sources close to Mohamed Elkashashy and Chris Farnell react to West Brom investment news
Sources close to Mohamed Elkashashy and Chris Farnell have insisted any agreement to buy a stake in West Brom remains some way off, according to Express & Star.
The Athletic revealed on 15 June that Egyptian billionaire Elkashashy and his group along with Manchester-based sports lawyer Chris Farnell were in advanced talks to buy a minority stake at West Brom bringing an end to Guochan Lai’s nightmare majority control.
Yunyi Guokai (Shanghai) Sports Development Limited currently owns an 88 per cent stake at The Hawthorns and Lai’s representatives reached out to Elkashashy and Farnell previously, after they failed in a bid to buy newly promoted outfit Burnley back in 2020.

However, according to a brand new development from Express & Star [19 June] any agreement to buy a stake in the Baggies remains some way off, though talks are expected to continue this week.
Sold dreams
When news emerged last week of El Kashashy & Farnell’s bid to buy a minority stake in West Brom, fans may well have been forgiven for believing that a long and disastrous tide had turned at The Hawthorns.
The Chinese ownership at West Brom has been a nightmare, a circus and a complete and utter farce with the Baggies losing its prestigious Premier League status under their control, and also lacking the resources to claim an immediate return.

Albion fans have long been up in arms about the way has been run behind the scenes with controlling shareholder Lai taking out a £5million loan, failing to repay it and then having it written off in the latest set of accounts.
Something has to change at The Hawthorns and the Athletic’s news in the past few days looked to have been the chance for fans to regain some kind of hope that they can reclaim their club back.
However, things have been brought back down to earth again with any kind of potential agreement way off for now.
Although talks continue about a minority stake in the club, the West Brom fans may have to continue in their undeserved suffering for a while longer. As we’re seeing as some of the biggest clubs in the country, these takeover talks can become a gruelling and never-ending needless saga.
Patience is needed, however hard and difficult it may get.
In other West Brom news, a door has opened for the Albion to potentially re-sign Matheus Pereira.
