West Brom boosted by ‘breaking’ Sky Sports update on Carlos Corberan Tuesday amid Leeds United manager links

There has been no approach made from Leeds United for West Brom boss Carlos Corberan as they continue their interview process, Sky Sports reports.

In a “breaking” update on Tuesday (20 June) Patrick Vieira and Daniel Farke were named in the running for the Elland Road job, but currently not the Spaniard.

Despite links to the Baggies boss, who was previously a coach at the West Yorkshire club before becoming a manager in his own right, it seems he is not a contender as official contact has not been made.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News Tuesday (20 June) Rob Wotton said: “Let’s bring you some breaking news, Patrick Vieira is one of the names under consideration to become the new head coach of Leeds.

“Interviews are scheduled to take place this week with former Norwich boss Daniel Farke one of those said to meet the Elland Road hierarchy.

“West Brom boss Carlos Corberan has also been linked with the job but he is under contract at West Brom. No approach has been made at this stage.”

Relief

Albion fans will be glad to hear that it looks like Corberan is currently, at best, an outside candidate for the Leeds United job.

On paper he would seem an obvious candidate for any ambitious second tier side to want in charge, which is clearly why West Brom need him to stay at The Hawthorns.

It may simply be that he would require compensation compared to the two named out-of-work managers, but given that would reportedly amount to just a £2million release clause [Daily Mail, 1 June] it would be surprising if the Whites have discounted him for that reason.

West Brom

Baggies supporters will hope it is because he’s made clear behind the scenes that he has no interested in leaving, having shut down speculation once already by signing a new contract in February.

If he isn’t going anywhere this summer it is arguably a bigger boost to West Brom than any single incoming or outgoing transfer in the window.

There is sure to still be some edginess throughout the offseason given the uncertain financial situation at the club could change the parameters of what he is able to do quickly.

But for now, keeping the 40-year-old in the face of links to Elland Road twice in six months would be a significant boost.

In other West Brom news, the boss’ Huddersfield history provides an element of concern over whether the club can keep hold of him this summer.
