Carlton Palmer admits West Brom financial situation could force Jayson Molumby sale after latest transfer news

Carlton Palmer believes the “strange” financial situation at West Brom may force Jayson Molumby out of The Hawthorns exit door, with Leeds United interested.

The 23-year-old had proven a superb and crucial performer for Carlos Corberan last season, registering four goals and four assists from 43 Championship games as the Baggies narrowly missed out on a playoff place.

The Daily Mail reported on 29 April that an imminent fire sale of several key stars is expected at the club in order to balance the books at The Hawthorns and that includes Molumby who according to newspaper journalist Alan Nixon [18 June] writing on his Patreon page, Leeds are keen on signing him this summer.

West Brom

It is believed that West Brom could make one of their key men available for sale this summer, which left Palmer rather sceptical as to why the Baggies would want to sell such a crucial figure in Corberan’s plans.

Speaking to Football League World [21 June], he said: “This is a strange one, for me.

“Why would West Brom want to sell one of their best players?

“Maybe the uncertainty of the ownership of the football club and the financial positions that they’re now finding themselves in, maybe that’s forced their hands.”

Could be damaging

With the Baggies desperate to acquire much-needed funds in order to rebuild the squad for next season, selling some of their prized possessions have become a tempting possibility, but fans may be forgiven for becoming deeply angered by the prospect of the Baggies strengthening a key promotion rival.

It certainly makes sense for West Brom to keep Corberan’s key stars and sell those who aren’t necessarily needed in the squad and Molumby certainly isn’t one of them.

West Brom

Molumby, known for his “Perfect” aggression, midfield invention, dynamism and cutting-edge play has become something of a unique weapon in the West Brom squad over the past year. But more crucially, he’s a player West Brom simply cannot afford to lose.

With Leeds United desperately on the prowl to secure their own midfield targets with the likes of Tyler Adams, Brendan Aaronson and Marc Roca departing Elland Road, Molumby certainly represents an attractive proposition for the West Yorkshire outfit given his Championship-level experience and suitability to the high-energy style that Leeds United are known for.

But the Baggies could well be making a huge error in selling Molumby as replacing his unique style could prove an impossible task for Corberan.

If the Baggies are serious about building on their tremendous trajectory under Corberan’s stewardship and going that one step further in the division next season, then keeping both the Spaniard and Molumby away from Leeds United’s grasp should be a priority.
