West Brom takeover may only be worth £50m – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Brom could be worth as little as £50million as takeover news continues to swirl at The Hawthorns this month.

The Daily Mail reported on 24 June that Mohamed El Kashashy has made an offer to Guochuan Lai for minority investment, but Lai is now desperate to get out completely.

The finance expert admitted that any price between £50million and £75million would be good business for all parties given the turmoil currently at the club.

“It has been reported that they were after a £75million target for a valuation,” he exclusively told West Brom News.

“They have lost the parachute payments now, they are still in the Championship, so I think £50-75million would probably be in the ballpark of what is realistic.

Some people may say that should be higher, you may be looking closer to £100million, but that is a stretch right now for West Brom.

If you’re an investor coming in, given the turmoil and the ownership structure behind the scenes and how that has played out, you’re not likely to hit that top end anyway, you’re going to be looking in that other ballpark. If that is the target and the valuation we end up seeing, I would perceive that to be good business for all parties.”

This story could finally be coming to a close with Lai.

Having said that, it does not seem imminent and given the sheer number of issues at The Hawthorns, any takeover or investment certainly would not go through straight away.
