Quevin Castro agrees terms to join York City when West Brom contract expires

West Brom midfielder Quevin Castro is set to join National League side York City on a free following the expiration of his contract, as confirmed by the Yorkshire club.

The 21-year-old joined the Baggies in 2021, where he made a series of loans to Burton Albion, Notts County and most recently Gateshead.

Castro, who made just two appearances for West Brom including a 6-0 League Cup defeat to Arsenal in 2021, will join York City on 1 July.

Finding his level

Castro’s most successful spell in professional football came last season with his six-month loan spell at playoff final winners Notts County.

In 14 National League appearances, he netted four times and claimed an assist, with perhaps his most impressive goal coming from a long-range free-kick against his new club.

Following trials at Arsenal, Chelsea, and Ipswich [Express and Star], he put pen-to-paper for West Brom signing a two-year deal after impressing with his technical ability and power in midfield.

However, Castro never truly got to show his ability to the Hawthorns faithful as perhaps the Championship was a level too high for the Sporting CP academy product.

But a fresh start as a permeant member of York’s squad could be the change Castro needs to reinvigorate his career after such a promising start, and at just 21 years old he has plenty of time to impress as a Minsterman.

His adaptability may become useful for York next season also. While Castro is predominantly an attacking midfielder, he has played on the left wing and has the ability to cut in and utilise his powerful right foot.

Baggies fans will wish Castro well as he enters a new stage in his young career.
