West Brom must ensure money is reinvested wisely as they risk Championship purgatory
West Brom owners must make sure the money made off player sales is reinvested adequately into the squad, to avoid the risk of slipping away in the Championship.
It is well known by now that West Brom’s financial struggles mean they must sell players if they want to invest. The books need to be balanced, and so more players are likely to follow £7million Dara O’Shea out the door, but the money made cannot all go towards the club.
Crucially, West Brom have to avoid any financial penalties they could face, so money has to go towards making sure they comply with the EFL’s financial parameters, but selling players without sufficient investment in the squad is a recipe for disaster.

The sale of O’Shea was a good start to getting the money situation in order, with the academy product’s move to Burnley ensuring his club made a substantial profit towards their income.
The trouble is, if West Brom sell all their stars, they risk ending up as another former Premier League club who look doomed to remain in the Championship – or even lower. The likes of Hull City, Cardiff, Huddersfield, Swansea and Stoke have all been in the Premier League since 2017, and are now languishing in the Championship.

The Baggies will have to invest their income wisely, not being able to spend big on transfer fees, having spent under £10million on players since 2021 [Transfermarkt].
Young players and those with sell-on value could be key should they remain in the second division much longer, with the signing of Jayson Molumby in 2022 the type of deal West Brom should be doing more of.
With the likes of Molumby and Grady Diangana – key parts of this West Brom squad – looking likely to leave this summer, the hope among fans will be that it doesn’t affect the team too much and that their replacements can keep Albion competitive.
