Nathan Ferguson has not been missed at West Brom after contract update

When Nathan Ferguson left West Brom for a move to Crystal Palace under controversial circumstances, nobody could have predicted the way the move would go, after the defender has agreed a contract extension in South London.

The Evening Standard have shared news that former Albion academy graduate Ferguson has put pen to paper on a 1-year extension to his deal with the Eagles, despite having played just eight minutes of senior football.

Ferguson left West Brom in controversial circumstances, having failed a medical which would’ve seen him move to London for £4million in January 2020, then moving for a fraction of the price, with a tribunal deciding a fee of £900,000 after his contract expired that summer.

The Baggies haven’t missed Ferguson as much as they would have thought, as the now 22-year-old has been plagued by injury issues and has played just eight minutes of senior football for Crystal Palace in a cameo appearance against Tottenham.

It has been reported that Palace believe that the Birmingham-born defender can overcome his injury struggles, with the support of his manager and former Baggies boss Roy Hodgson, but missing out on three years worth of football can be detrimental to a career, especially at such a key developmental stage.

Ferguson made 21 Championship appearances for West Brom in the 2019/20 season, getting one goal and one assist, but showed great versatility in his ability to play across the back line – playing 12 games at left back and 9 at right back, while appearing as a centre back for the academy sides.

Baggies fans’ annoyance at the low transfer fee received upon completion of his move can be eased by his lack of appearances since then, but will also want to see their former academy star flourish with the potential he showed before.

This is his final chance to prove fans wrong, who will not miss him one bit.
