Portsmouth manager provides update on West Brom target Jay Mingi

West Brom target Jay Mingi’s contract at Portsmouth runs out on the 1st of July, with no official decision having been made on his future, according to The News.

Having entered the final 48 hours of his contract, Portsmouth are still yet to hear from West Brom transfer target Mingi over his future, although a three-year deal which was offered in December remains an option for the 22-year-old among interest from elsewhere.

It is understood that Mingi’s representatives are exploring alternative options and assessing whether moves to Championship, League One or League Two sides are possible, having been linked to West Brom, Huddersfield and Birmingham in January.

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho revealed last week that he remained in the dark over the contract decision, but with less than 48 hours remaining on his current deal, a decision will need to be made soon for the benefit of all parties.

The deal makes sense for West Brom

Bringing in a talented young player for free will always be a good deal. Having explored a deal to bring the midfielder to the Hawthorns in January, it would make sense for the Baggies to reignite their interest, especially given their financial situation and lack of funds.

A deal for Mingi would represent a positive direction at the west midlands side, bringing in a young player on the cheap with potential to sell for a large profit margin in the future, and have him perform for them in the meantime.

Mingi made just 17 appearances for Pompey in League One last season, and would likely be a backup option should he decide to join West Brom this summer, but the possible departure of Jayson Molumby would free up space in the Baggies midfield.

This type of deal will be one West Brom should look to capitalise on in the coming weeks, with the lack of funds and need to sell players to comply with financial rules a real risk for the club.
