“Today I am announcing my retirement from football as a player,” Cleverley wrote on Instagram. “The last year has been immensely difficult trying to overcome the obstacles of injury.

“Unfortunately my body has failed me and just hasn’t got the capacity to perform anymore.”

His former Watford teammate and current Albion ace Chalobah replied: “Ahh man. Wishing you the best brother. Great times with you on and off the pitch.”

Special memories

Cleverley enjoyed a fantastic career at the very highest level, representing the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa and Everton among others in the Premier League, as well as picking up 13 caps for England.

He has now received plenty of words of support and encouragement following this difficult decision, with West Brom midfielder Chalobah just one of the players to send some heartfelt words.

Chalobah and Cleverley certainly enjoyed some superb memories during their coinciding spells with Watford, with the duo playing key roles as the club secured promotion back to the Premier League in 2021.

That is a dream that the Baggies ace is now chasing with his current club, but it looks set to be a very difficult ask once again next season, with the Championship always one of the most competitive leagues in world football.

Bringing in some experienced players this summer would do the Albion the world of good as they look to get back into the top flight.

In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan is “certain” to reverse Steve Bruce’s transfer strategy at the club this summer.
