Ally Robertson shares West Brom exit verdict after transfer news

West Brom legend Ally Robertson has described Dara O’Shea’s exit as a saviour for the club, and describes the current situation as needs must, with more departures likely, via the Express and Star.

Robertson admitted he is sad to see O’Shea go, as many West Brom fans will be, but the transfer fee the club have received could help the club given their current financial issues.

The Irishman came through West Brom’s academy before joining Burnley this summer, gaining his club a large profit during a time of need, with the Baggies needing to sell players to raise funds in this transfer window after their parachute payments ran out.

Writing for the Express and Star in the wake of the academy graduate’s summer move to Burnley, Robertson stated: “We can be disappointed to see him go while also knowing it probably has helped the club in the financial position that we are in.

“I wish there could be many more academy graduates to come through and make such a mark on the first-team squad like O’Shea has. To receive £7million for him in the current climate is a good deal for us.”

West Brom could be in for more disappointment this summer

After the disappointment of O’Shea leaving the club, West Brom fans should be braced for further losses as the club attempt to balance the books. As Robertson said, it really is needs must right now.

To have brought in £7million from an academy graduate will be a good kick for the club despite the reluctance to see him leave, and the hope will be that only a couple more sales are necessary, with first-team stars including Jayson Molumby and Grady Diangana also linked to exits.

In terms of incomings, the finances mean the club are likely to target the free agent and loan markets this summer to avoid the need to spend big fees on incoming players, with former Portsmouth midfielder Jay Mingi an option.

Robertson also touched on the importance of continuity in the dugout, claiming: “Ideally you want any manager to be in for a decent period of time, say at least three or four years – that allows any boss to build a squad and build a club.”

Hopefully, there aren’t too many more that need to leave.
