West Brom set to announce new behind-the-scenes hire as Gary Walsh leaves

West Brom have announced that they will soon appoint a new goalkeeping coach, as confirmed by the official club website.

The impending appointment comes as the Championship club confirms that Gary Walsh has officially departed from the role.

The 55-year-old had been with the Baggies since January 2019, helping progress the careers of a handful of key goalkeepers at the club.

“West Bromwich Albion can confirm Gary Walsh has today departed his role as goalkeeping coach at The Hawthorns,” as confirmed by the official West Brom website.

“The 55-year-old former Manchester United stopper joined the Baggies in January 2019 and worked alongside a host of No.1s, with Alex Palmer and Josh Griffiths earning first-team debuts during his tenure, while Sam Johnstone earned a regular place in the England squad.

“Walsh is a popular member of the Baggies backroom staff and leaves with the best wishes of all at the club. Albion will announce the appointment of a new goalkeeping coach in due course.”

Emotional farewell

It will no doubt be an emotional farewell, not just for Walsh, but for the many players and staff members that he worked with during his time at The Hawthorns.

He can definitely be credited for helping develop the likes of Palmer, Griffiths and Johnstone, with his hard work behind the scenes helping the goalkeeping trio all shine on the pitch.

Walsh leaves with the best wishes of the Albion, and is certain to land on his feet at another club, perhaps in the Championship or maybe further afield.

As for West Brom, it is unclear if they already have a replacement lined up. What is more likely is that they have a shortlist narrowed down to a handful of names, but it is also very possible that a new name has already been chosen.

It’s an important role on the training ground and of course on matchdays, and Baggies manager Carlos Corberan will want someone with plenty of experience as the club look to go one better than last season and secure a Championship play-off place.

In other West Brom news, John Swift has been blown away by one Albion teammate in pre-season training.
