Conor Townsend in mix to be new West Brom club captain after Jake Livermore exit

Conor Townsend is in the mix to replace the departing Jake Livermore as West Brom club captain, according to The Athletic.

Livermore announced that he would be departing The Hawthorns back in April before their final home game of the season having not been a regular player since Carlos Corberan joined the club in October last year.

Livermore made 194 appearances for the club in both the Championship and Premier League and could be passing down the captain’s armband to another long-time Baggie.

Losing leaders

After Livermore’s exit from The Hawthorns, the Baggies’ vice captain Dara O’Shea was swooped up to the Premier League to newly-promoted Burnley.

West Brom has lost a couple of good leaders in the squad. In preparation for a tough and important Championship season, they will need a strong leader to captain them and set an example.

The club have many experience quality players who have been at the club for a long time, such as Kyle Bartley and Matt Philips. However, Townsend was ever-present for the Baggies last season making an appearance in every single Championship match.

Townsend will be entering his sixth season at West Brom, pulling on the shirt 167 times during this spell. Now, he looks tipped to take the armband. He would be eager to get the club back into the Premier League after having a small taste of the top flight in 2020/21 where he made 25 appearances.

The Hull City academy graduate has already captained the Baggies, doing so last season when O’Shea was unavailable towards the end of the campaign, showing that Coberan clearly backs the 30-year-old in the leadership role.

While Corberan has a significant decision to make, Townsend may feel confident that he will be the man to lead his side into the Championship next season.
