The Baggies midfielder was quick to praise the role his boss has played in helping him develop his game, after impressive pre-season performances, as he has a clear ambition to improve both his performances and his numbers.

Gardner-Hickman scored a brace in the Baggies’ 2-2 draw with Salford and will be looking to make more of an impact on the West Brom first team in the coming season amid the struggles the club are facing in the transfer market.

Speaking to WBATV following his brace against Salford, and reported by Birmingham Live, Gardner-Hickman shared: “He [Corberan] has high demands and it’s very good as a young player especially coming through, you know you can’t rest and you can’t get complacent for a minute, so that’s really good.

“Some of the stuff I’ve learned off him already can take my game to the next level. Personally, I’m just enjoying learning off the gaffer, the senior lads, it’s really helping me having a full pre-season with everyone.”

When asked about his aim for the coming season and his development, the midfielder revealed: “It’s more goal contributions as I said, that’s definitely one thing, but I think it’s just working hard – I always try to do that – but definitely getting forward and backwards in helping the team, and not just in one specific area. My goal this season is trying to help everywhere I can, both defending and in attack.”

Baggies youngsters taking their chances

Amid a summer of worry for the Baggies given their financial turmoil, and the need to sell star players before they can invest in the playing squad, a number of young players have stepped up to provide fresh options for their club.

Gardner-Hickman is certainly one of these players. He has been in and out of the West Brom side, making 31 appearances in the Championship last season although he averaged just 37 minutes per game, and is now looking to make his mark on the first team.

His desire to work hard for the side will put him in good stead, while the praise for his boss is sure to help his cause. The revelation that Corberan’s high demands and training methods are being received well will be good news for the Baggies.

The 21-year-old’s admission that he believes he can take his game to the next level will be a welcome boost to the club, and if he can keep his pre-season form up we are bound to see more of him across the Championship campaign.
