West Brom hoping to sign a striker before Saturday after Carlos Corberan quotes

West Brom are hoping to add another striker to their squad before their Championship season kicks off against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, following quotes from Carlos Corberan, according to Birmingham Live.

Corberan wants to add another striker to his squad due to Daryl Dike’s long-term injury, which is expected to keep him out until later this year.

It is suggested that Brandon Thomas-Asante will be their main number nine, as he has started pre-season supported by youngsters Mo Faal and Jovan Malcolm, but this will not be enough for the Championship.

Birmingham Live have shared Corberan’s plans, with the boss revealing: “I think we have the responsibility to start the league covering some of the positions better, like I told you, specifically the number nine, is something that we are going in the market to find because you cannot only depend on Asante.

“For Faal it’s a big, massive step to move from National League North level to the Championship, with young players you cannot put the responsibility for the future of the club with young players to go. We have a proactive idea to cover the position because you need two players to be a competitive team.”

The Spaniard went on to state: “As a coach, I have the responsibility to keep working with the players I have. What I learned in life is you need to be focused to work with what you have. You have to adapt to change one way or another way, what you want doesn’t always happen.”

Clear gaps in the squad

West Brom’s financial issues and need to balance the books have been well documented throughout this transfer window, but we are approaching a stage where it’s do-or-die for the Baggies’ hopes of a strong season.

There are still clear gaps in the squad, with the striker the most glaring of all, and the boss has made no false claims, continuing his trend of being extremely open in interviews regarding his desires and the inner workings of the club.

Thomas-Asante will be able to hold his own as their first choice in the Championship, but it would be unreasonable to expect him to start and play every 90 minutes for a 46-game season (and that’s if the Baggies don’t make the playoffs), plus cup games.

West Brom have most recently been linked [the Mirror, 1 August] with a move for Midtjylland striker Sory Kaba, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff City where he scored eight Championship goals in 17 appearances.
