West Brom on verge of gamechanger double transfer for Josh Maja and Sory Kaba

West Brom have sprung into life with a deal for ex-Sunderland striker Josh Maja closing in [Express and Star, 1 August], while the club are hopeful of winning the race for former Cardiff loanee Sory Kaba [Mirror, 1 August].

Maja is a free agent after his Bordeaux contract expired, following the club’s dramatic end to the season which saw them fail to earn promotion, and will join the Black Country side on a free transfer.

Kaba’s price tag has been quoted at around £2million [Birmingham World, 1 August], which would represent another bargain deal for the Baggies. If the club can pull off both deals for a combined £2million, it would be a game-changing piece of business.

Both Maja and Kaba have shown that they are efficient in front of goal, and would provide two very different styles at the top of the West Brom side. They would complement each other, as well as current Baggies forward Brandon Thomas-Asante perfectly.

Kaba is a dominant aerial presence, very effective using his head and in front of goal, while Maja is more of a poacher, with fantastic positional awareness and the ability to sniff out chances, with ruthless finishing ensuring he takes those opportunities.

The former Cardiff loanee scored eight goals in his short spell in South Wales despite their low league position, proving he can perform to a high standard at Championship level even when the service provided to him isn’t exceptional.

These two signings in a key area could prove the difference between an average season and an exciting one at The Hawthorns. The mood around the club has been at a low recently, but the excitement around both deals is enough to lift both fans and players.

In other West Brom news, the club are planning to seal a transfer deal before Saturday.
