West Brom striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has been involved in a "nasty" collision in the club's opening Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers, according to journalist Joe Chapman.

The Birmingham Live journalist shared via his personal Twitter account that the striker went down injured following a collision with Joe Rankin-Costello, as a result of Thomas-Asante being "sent flying" in the buildup, but no foul was given.

West Brom will be hoping the injury to their main striker isn't too bad, as he is currently the only option up front with new signing Josh Maja unavailable for the game against Blackburn.

"Nasty" collisions already

Just ten minutes into the new Championship season, West Brom are experiencing exactly why a deep squad is a key part of competing at a high level in this division, with heavy challenges and knocks flying around immediately, as teams start how they mean to go on.

A lack of squad depth has been highlighted as a key issue for the Baggies this season, with the club still needing to sell players in order to balance the books, while incoming signings are a rarity unless they can be done on the cheap as seen with Maja.

When fixture congestion starts to build up over the winter months, these types of knocks and heavy challenges begin to ramp up and become more of a problem, as fatigue begins to play a part in potential injury issues.

Thomas-Asante will be one of West Brom's key players in the coming season as he looks to lead the line alongside new signing Josh Maja, and he will need to avoid any injury issues if the club want to keep their promotion hopes high, even this early in the season.
