Ally Robertson shares how West Brom can beat Leeds United at Elland Road

West Brom legend Ally Robertson believes his former side are capable of overcoming Leeds United at Elland Road on Friday [18 August].

The Baggies held on to beat Swansea City 3-2 last weekend to put their opening-game loss against Blackburn Rovers behind them.

Leeds have made a slow start to their first campaign back in the Championship in four seasons, meanwhile, as they were held 2-2 by Cardiff City before going down 1-0 to Birmingham City last time out.

United will ultimately be the favourites to come out on top on home soil, but Robertson has outlined how Carlos Corberan’s side can get the better of their opponents.

Robertson said in his Express & Star column on Wednesday [16 August]: “We have a hard game ahead of us at Leeds on Friday, but if we can go and repeat our first 70 minutes [against Swansea] then we won’t be far away, I believe.

“If we go to Elland Road under the lights and can avoid defeat that’d be great. If we can go there and win at Carlos’ old team that would be absolutely brilliant.

“It will go down to who can defend better as a unit on the night and who will take their chance.”

Winnable game

After back-to-back away losses to begin the season, having also lost to second-tier rivals Stoke City in the EFL Cup, last weekend’s victory over Swansea was much needed for Albion.

Corberan’s side looked superb in racing into a three-goal lead, only to take their foot off the gas and allow Swansea back into the game with a couple of quickfire goals.

The aim now will be to build on that victory by picking up a positive result in the opening fixture of the weekend in the Championship, with all eyes on Elland Road.

A draw would surely be considered a positive result for the Baggies, helping to stop the rot in terms of their away results, but there is no reason why they cannot go to West Yorkshire and come away with all three points.

Leeds have been hit by numerous injury problems and have a couple of players in their ranks refusing to play, something that West Brom can take full advantage of.

After a loss and a win to date in the league, the result on Friday will go a long way to shaping supporters’ mood around The Hawthorns at this early stage of the campaign.

In other West Brom news, Robertson hit out at an “abysmal” decision during Albion’s win against Swansea.
