Anonymous Jed Wallace in absolute stinker as West Brom lose v Huddersfield

Jed Wallace had an absolute stinker as West Brom fell to a home defeat against Huddersfield Town on Saturday (2 September).

A second-half goal from midfielder John Swift wasn’t enough for the Baggies as Delano Burgzorg’s opener was complemented by a 96th-minute winner from Jack Rudoni for the Terriers.

While it was a disappointing afternoon all round for Albion, skipper Wallace had a largely forgettable outing as he barely touched the ball in his side’s defeat at the Hawthorns.

It was a pretty poor performance from the 29-year-old, who is usually one player that West Brom can rely on to be consistent and do a job for his side.

It’s that consistency that has led to Carlos Corberan deciding to hand the midfielder the armband this season as he looks for him to take on more of a leadership role.

But he hasn’t had a great start to the campaign, having failed to get off the mark in front of goal and registering just one assist in his opening five appearances.

That is on the back of a promising first season at the Hawthorns, where he scored six goals and laid on eight assists as he appeared in every single game for the Baggies.

It didn’t get any better for him this weekend, as Wallace was hauled off after 66 minutes in the defeat to Huddersfield on Saturday after having just 32 touches during his time on the pitch [WhoScored].

He was replaced by Brighton loanee Jeremy Sarmiento who, despite playing just 24 minutes, had 26 touches in the game – only six fewer than his teammate.

The midfielder also proved to be quite predictable on the rare occasions that he did have the ball at his feet, having only been successful in one of his five dribbles during the game.

On top of that, he only made 13 successful passes to his teammates to record a 72 per cent success rate – marking the joint-lowest figure of the outfield players alongside Conor Townsend.

Even though the winger is the captain and has been an ever-present under Corberan, that doesn’t mean he has the right to start every game if he isn’t playing at his best level.

With Sarmiento impressing during his brief cameos off the bench, Wallace will certainly have to up his performances if he wants to keep his place in the starting lineup moving forward.
