Finance Expert shares West Brom transfer verdict after quiet summer
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Brom columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns...
Dan Plumley has insisted that West Brom were never in a position to be aggressive in the transfer window, despite the sale of Dara O’Shea to Burnley.
The Irishman moved to Turf Moor for around £7million, but the Baggies managed to keep hold of the rest of their squad to boost their own promotion hopes.
The finance expert admitted that it was no surprise to see only two loans and one free transfer, and it will take a cash injection to change the current strategy.

“Looking at the make-up of that league and where the financial muscle has been flexed, it’s been the three relegated clubs,” he exclusively told West Brom News.
“We’ve talked about West Brom about not being in a position at the minute to be aggressive in the transfer market, and that’s due to the overall financial picture of the club.
“That’s due to the ownership structure, the whole governance make-up and due to the fact they’ve had those parachute payments and have come to the end of that and are still suffering from that.
“It’s never one factor, it’s always multiple things but it’s just the position they are in at the minute. You have to rebuild and reset and that takes a couple of years, and if you look at the dealings in this window, it is no surprise to see how they’re operating.

“There is not enough generated from that one sale to then go and spend big, it needs to be a substantial bit of money coming in or an injection from elsewhere to drive that strategy. It’s reflective of where West Brom are at the minute.”
In other West Brom news, Plumley has also predicted that a change of ownership is needed at The Hawthorns
