West Brom make approach to sign free agent Xeka after Ligue 1 release

West Brom have been in contact with the agent of 28-year-old Xeka, who has been a free agent since his deal with Ligue 1 side Rennes ended at the end of last season, according to TEAMtalk.

The online news outlet shared via their website on 13 August that the Baggies have made an enquiry to his agent, but face competition from Southampton as well as Premier League sides Wolves, Crystal Palace, Everton and Sheffield United for his signature.

It is also reported that Xeka is attracting interest from clubs in Spain, Turkey, Italy and France as the race for his signature hots up following the closure of the transfer window.

An opportunity to strengthen

This would be a real coup from the Baggies if they can land his signature despite the level of interest from elsewhere, and they may see it as a great opportunity to strengthen their side by utilising the free agent market due to their lack of available funds.

Xeka spent last season at Rennes, having been released by Lille, where he played a part title win in the 2020/21 season before being let go at the end of 2021/22. His time at Rennes was turbulent, as he made just eight league appearances for the club before injuring his ankle in January.

Now, though, he will look to reignite his career abroad, having recovered from his ankle surgery. The interest from around Europe is a testament to his quality and how desired he is. The Premier League interest could prove difficult to turn down, however.

West Brom

If West Brom are able to bring a player with top-division winning experience to the club it will surely strengthen their bid for the playoffs, which would be some achievement given the off-pitch turmoil surrounding the club.
