Next West Brom owners could be as clueless as Guochuan Lai as big-money takeover news emerges

The West Brom owners are intent on completing a sale of the club before the end of 2023 and talks are now ongoing, according to John Percy.

The Telegraph journalist reported on Tuesday (19 September) that the owners are looking at a paltry £50million sum to sell the Baggies.

Parties from the United States and the Middle East are interested in purchasing the club.

Via Twitter, Percy wrote, “West Brom are in talks with potential new owners over a £50m takeover, to avoid a player fire sale. Parties from US & Middle East interested, with WBA intent on agreeing a deal this year. Club currently under big pressure to raise cash in Jan.”

The new owners may be as clueless as the current controlling shareholder and chairman Guochuan Lai for wanting to take over the club.

This is a side that’s already in huge debt and there is every possibility that a firesale is triggered in the January transfer window.

The coffers are dry at the club and if the takeover does not happen before the window, instead of looking up to the Premier League, they may be fighting until the final days to stay in the Championship.

Clubs have dropped from the first division to the third and fourth tiers and have never returned and there is every possibility that can happen to anyone that’s not run properly.

Whoever eventually ends up taking control cannot be as naive as that could have devastating effects in the long term.

The £50million figure also seems like a joke but given how the club has been run over the past few years, one can see the logic behind it.
