Ex-Wolves shares ‘lucky escape’ West Brom verdict after what happened in first half v Millwall

Matt Murray believes West Brom had a “lucky escape” after the penalty incident that took place in the first half of the 0-0 draw against Millwall on Saturday (23 September).

Reporting live from the Hawthorns on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (03:29pm), the ex-Wolves keeper said Alex Palmer made a “really good save” as he pushed Zian Flemming’s penalty around the post.

He added that it was lucky for the Baggies as the 27-year-old keeper’s stop ensured they went in at the break with the scoreline still level against the Lions.

“Penalty to Millwall,” said Murray. “It’s been missed, it’s been saved by the West Brom goalkeeper. We’ve had very little action here.

“But it was a corner that came in, Kyle Bartley has been in the wars, he definitely puts his arm up, it’s a handball, the referee has no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

“It’s Zian Flemming who steps up, goes to Alex Palmer’s right, but he makes a really good save to push it around the post. Lucky escape for West Brom.”

Reliable

This is another occasion where the Baggies can feel very fortunate that they have such a reliable man playing in between the sticks for them.

There was interest in Palmer from Premier League newcomers Luton over the summer, but Albion did very well to fend them off and keep holder of their number one.

It was an excellent save to deny Flemming and ensure his side went in at the break with the scoreline still level after there wasn’t too much other action of note across the half.

The keeper will be absolutely imperative to Carlos Corberan’s hopes of pushing up the table and getting involved in the mix for promotion this season.

They can’t afford to be giving chances such as this away very often, though, if they want to be involved in the conversation in the top half of the table.
