West Brom: Journalist provides fresh Martin Kelly update after Carlos Corberan comments

Martin Kelly is still “some way off” a return to action with West Brom despite stepping up his injury recovery, according to journalist George Bennett.

The 33-year-old defender sustained a serious knee injury on loan at Wigan Athletic in February and has not played since.

As confirmed by Carlos Corberan, Kelly started working on technical drills with Albion’s backroom staff on Friday [29 September] in a sign that he is fully on the comeback trail.

However, in a report for the Express & Star [29 September], Bennett stated that “a return to action still seems to be some way off”.

Kelly cruelly sustained an injury in his first game for Wigan after joining on loan in January.

Departing The Hawthorns on a temporary basis was supposed to provide the veteran defender with a chance to kickstart his career, but the opposite is true.

Instead, he is now on the outside looking in at Albion, with opportunities expected to be limited when he does return.

In fact, Corberan has even said as much.

“We need to analyse when the right moment is and to see what is the best decision for him to be loaned, or to be kept,” Corberan said [Express & Star, 29 September].

“That’s something that I cannot tell you because it’s September. If you ask me now if he is ready, then I’ll tell you he is not.”

Even if he is still some way off a return, you would expect the former Liverpool player to be fully up to speed come January.

It may well be that he is loaned out once again early in the new year, before Albion then make a decision on his future beyond this season.

In other West Brom news, an Albion player has seemingly not rectified “problems” flagged by Corberan recently.
