Journalist wowed by what ‘exceptional’ Alex Mowatt did in West Brom win at Preston

Journalist Lewis Cox was blown away by the “exceptional” goal West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt scored in the thumping win over Preston North End.

Mowatt scored the second of Albion’s goals in their 4-0 victory at Deepdale, where Preston had previously won all four home Championship matches this season.

The 28-year-old superbly found the far corner just short of the half-hour mark on Saturday [30 September] for his first goal since April 2022.

Reviewing the game for the Express & Star [2 October], Cox said: “The game felt over as a contest by half-an-hour as midfielder Alex Mowatt, exceptional throughout, made it 2-0 by doubling the lead handed to Albion through [Darnell]’ Furlong’s fourth-minute stunner.

“Mowatt’s goal was one to remember and started from the hands of [Alex] Palmer and his exceptional clearance to release a flying [Grady] Diangana down the right flank.”

Revitalised

Mowatt has started back-to-back games for West Brom and, after performing well in the 0-0 draw with Millwall, once again impressed versus PNE.

The former England U20 international spent last season on loan with Middlesbrough and has had to be patient for those starts since returning.

After scoring his first goal in 17 months, Mowatt has surely done enough to retain his spot in the XI against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday [3 October].

Not only did he get on the scoresheet, he also followed Carlos Corberan’s defensive instructions to a tee as he continued to track back even with the points in the bag.

Mowatt is now firmly back in the picture at The Hawthorns, seemingly revitalised again after a season away.

The aim now is to find consistency in those performances to help keep the Baggies in the play-off picture.

In other West Brom news, Wednesday could be without a couple of keys players for the midweek showdown at The Hawthorns.
