West Brom among clubs in trouble as frightening verdict emerges – Martin Calladine
Martin Calladine has listed West Brom among the names of clubs that are in trouble as a result of poor ownership amid the wider issue of governance in football.
The author shared via his Twitter account what he describes as a frighteningly long list of clubs struggling with their owners in recent years, with West Brom among them amid their financial issues under Guochuan Lai.
Calladine’s book The Ugly Game is focused around ownership issues in football – something he is passionate about defending, with all too many clubs falling victim to unsuitable owners.
Sharing his views via his Twitter account on 2 October, Calladine shared an article by Tom Reed detailing the ongoing protests at Reading, as he wrote: “Really good piece on the growing protest movement at Reading, which is desperately trying to tackle the unfolding crisis at the club and its connection to the bigger issue of football governance.
“Wigan and West Brom, Southend and Scunthorpe, Derby and Charlton. The list of clubs in trouble in recent years, even just the clubs in trouble right now, is frighteningly long.
“It’s going to keep happening until there is real change.”

West Brom among those struggling
With the current ownership issues still ongoing at The Hawthorns, where huge debts are being racked up, interest payments are rising by the month and little to no money is being invested into the club itself, West Brom find themselves in a tough place.
There have been threats of a need to sell players to help fund daily operations at the club and to pay off debts, which started in the summer as seen by the sale of Dara O’Shea.
Protests have been made at The Hawthorns, with the Action For Albion group making their voices heard, and an appearance on talkSPORT recently helped to spread the message further, as Simon Jordan warned of a possible financial meltdown.
Luckily for the Baggies, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Managing director Mark Miles recently shared to fans that he is overseeing talks about the purchase of the club, with hopes of a deal being agreed before the new year.
In other West Brom news, Carlos Corberan shared the “crazy” decision that helped beat Preston.
