Keith Hackett rages after controversial penalty incident in West Brom loss v Birmingham City as video footage emerge
Former FIFA referee Keith Hackett was furious at the decision to award a penalty against West Brom during their 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City.
The Baggies took the lead through John Swift but Birmingham were allowed back into the game after a bizarre decision from the referee to award a penalty after Koji Miyoshi slipped before a challenge.
The Blues converted it and went on to win the game comfortably, but Hackett reacted to video footage of the incident on Twitter (7 October) and couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
“No sense, that’s not a foul,” he said on his personal Twitter account responding to a fan who had posted the video.
Crazy
That could quite genuinely be the worst refereeing decision that we have ever seen, and it totally shaped the game and allowed Birmingham to get a win.
West Brom weren’t really good enough over the course of the 90 minutes, but when you have the lead you’re in control and for a crazy decision like that to turn the game on it’s head is ridiculous.

We saw an incredible amount of uproar for the VAR mistake between Tottenham and Liverpool last week which was bad, but this is arguably just as bad of an error and it will be barely be spoken about because we’re just little old West Brom.
That’s the type of decision that can lose a manager their job or cost a team promotion in the long run and it’s simply not good enough.
It was clear for all to see that it wasn’t a penalty, even the Birmingham fans were shocked, and an experienced referee like Hackett has confirmed we have every right to be furious about it.
