Potential John Swift replacement at West Brom named

Alex Mowatt could be an option to deputise in the more advanced role occupied by John Swift at West Brom this season, according to Express & Star journalist Lewis Cox.

Swift has been in superb form for the Baggies this term and scored his sixth Championship goal of the campaign in the 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City prior to the international break.

However, Swift is set for a spell on the sidelines with a calf injury meaning boss Carlos Corberan will have to tinker with his options starting against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday (21 October).

And Cox thinks versatile midfielder Mowatt, who usually plays in a more central midfield berth, could be someone to take on the mantle.

Writing for Express & Star on Wednesday (18 October), Cox wrote: “Versatile midfield option Mowatt can be a possible option to fill in the role left vacant by Swift for games to come, with Okay Yokuslu, Jayson Molumby and Nathaniel Chalobah vying for midfield roles.”

A big miss

There is absolutely no dressing it up, Swift is a huge miss for the Baggies and with the attacking midfielder possibly out for six weeks there is a huge onus on the supporting cast to find the goals at The Hawthorns.

With summer arrivals Josh Maja and Jeremy Sarmiento also having injury issues of their own, Corberan is facing a bit of a headache in the attacking areas and has to find a solution to make sure the goals are flowing for the Baggies.

Mowatt started the campaign out of the side but has worked his way into contention and proven a pretty decent option in the centre of midfield, where the Baggies are reasonably well stocked.

It would represent somewhat of a gamble to move him a bit further forward and if things do not pan out well it could affect his confidence and set him back a few steps. But he definitely has the talent and range of passing to influence games in that area of the park, so don’t be surprised to see Corberan taking that option against Plymouth.

In other West Brom news, Sarmiento has shared a new timeline for his own recovery at The Hawthorns.
