West Brom player ratings v Coventry City: Matt Phillips stars, Nathaniel Chalobah stinks

West Brom ended the gameweek in the top six after securing an impressive 2-0 victory away at Coventry City on Monday, 30 October.

Grady Diangana opened the scoring for the visitors and Brandon Thomas-Asante came off the bench in the second half to put the game beyond all doubt.

Here are our player ratings from the game:

West Brom

Alex Palmer – 7

The Baggies goalkeeper was called into action on numerous occasions and he stood up to the task. He made a few key saves and positioned himself well for Haji Wright’s headline-making miss.

Cedric Kipre – 8

The Baggies centre-back has been absolutely unbelievable this season and put in another solid performance at the back. His positioning was exceptional as he dealt well with crosses all game and did not deserve to be booked for that which was another bad bit of refereeing. He was good with his passing as well so Corberan will be impressed by his performance.

Kyle Bartley – 6

Proved to be a priceless threat from set pieces and did his job of wreaking chaos in the opposition penalty area as and when he could. Was a tad shaky with his passes but apart from that, there was not much to fault from his performance.

Erik Pieters – 4

Did not look up for the game at all and on numerous instances, seemed completely off the pace. In the 74th minute, his yellow card just summed up the sort of outing he was having for the Baggies. He was caught out of possession on numerous occasions and the West Brom defender needs to work on his game tremendously if he is to keep playing.

West Brom

Pipa – 5

Had moments where he struggled in possession and did not have the liberty to go forward as and when he would’ve liked. Made a few defensive contributions but still does not seem fully adapted to the Championship and this West Brom side.

Nathaniel Chalobah – 3

Picked up a silly booking in the first half and was walking the tightrope for the rest of the contest. Corberan rightly brought him off for Thomas-Asante who did incredibly well after coming on. He even completed only 65 per cent of his passes and lost his only attempted aerial duel and won just two of his attempted six ground duels.

Okay Yokuslu – 7

Oozed class once again in the middle of the park and it was a solid display with and without the ball for the Turkey international. Per Sofascore, he completed 87 per cent of his passes and also won the majority of his duels which is a very good return.

Alex Mowatt – 6

Much like his partner in midfield, Mowatt did well to keep things ticking. However, his long passes were off the mark and he even struggled with his crosses into the box. Against a team sitting back and waiting for the opposition to break them down, Mowatt would’ve struggled.

Matt Phillips – 9

Made a wonderful turn to free himself up into space as he provided an assist for Thomas-Asante’s goal. It was marginally offside, but with no VAR, the goal was given, and Phillips deserves all the credit in the world for playing that pass. He played four key passes in the game and even contributed on the defensive end with three clearances and five tackles.

West Brom

Jed Wallace – 6

Started the game slowly and made some decisive errors that frustrated the travelling support. However, he picked his game up and became influential as things progressed to make up for the initial mistakes. He’ll have better games but it’s not worth dropping him for the next one.

Grady Diangana – 7

Fine footwork to score the first goal of the game. It did look offside, but he still had to do the hard bit and put the ball into the back of the net. No complaints with his overall performance as he gave it his all for the team.
