Carlos Corberan calls for introduction of VAR to the Championship as West Brom ‘want to win fairly’
Carlos Corberan has called for VAR to be introduced in the Championship as he admits that he wants his West Brom side to “win fairly.”
The Baggies continued their excellent recent run of form with a 2-0 win over Coventry City on Monday (30 October) with goals from Grady Diangana and Brandon Thomas-Asante ensuring Albion climbed to fifth as they continue their push for the play-off places.
But many believed that Thomas-Asante’s second-half goal shouldn’t have stood as the striker appeared to drift into an offside position and while Corberan admitted that he wasn’t sure whether the correct decision was made, he has called for officials to be given more assistance.

As quoted by Mail+ (31 October) he said: “For the second goal, if it’s not clear, it’s difficult to see.
“VAR would make more sense. I hope it wasn’t offside because I want to win fairly.”
Make more sense
Given the pace at which Championship football is played, it is hard to criticise officials for struggling to keep up with play for important moments in matches, such as offsides. On a second watch, it seems fairly obvious that Thomas-Asante has drifted into an offside position on Monday.
But what is obvious on screen, isn’t always clear in the stadium as it happens and it seems strange that the Championship has not yet moved to introduce some form of VAR into the division as it would help the referee’s decision-making massively.

It may receive plenty of criticism in the Premier League, but overall it is a valuable addition to the game, if and when you have the officials capable of using it effectively. As Corberan said, it would ensure that more often than not, the team who wins at least deserves the result.
Away from the decision, West Brom can do very little wrong in the Championship at this moment in time and Albion have well and truly put themselves in the battle for the play-off positions this season.
They have some tough games coming up, with Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester in their next five matches where we’ll likely get a true measure of just what Corberan’s Albion can achieve.
