Andy Hinchcliffe stunned by ‘outstanding’ West Brom moment v Ipswich live on Sky Sports

Andy Hinchcliffe was left stunned by a devastating counter-attacking move from West Brom as they hit Ipswich on the break during their 2-0 victory at The Hawthorns.

Grady Diangana put Albion two goals up in the 47th minute and they broke quickly from the back before he slotted the ball around the goalkeeper and in off the post.

The Sky Sports commentator was wowed by the move and picked out Jed Wallace and Conor Townsend in particular for the parts they played in the goal going from back to front in a matter of seconds.

West Brom

Hinchcliffe was speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event [25 November, 18:38] when he gushed: “He [Townsend] picks the ball up and what does he do? He doesn’t just lump it forward, he picks out the pass to Jed Wallace, he turns defence into attack.

“It’s brilliant combination play from the three West Brom attackers. All knowing what each other is doing, all being unselfish until the opportunity is right.

“That forward pass on the edge of his own box is outstanding, he bypasses all the Ipswich players and gets three dangerous attackers on the move, in behind the Ipswich defence.

“A brilliant finish, and a brilliant counter-attacking goal. No wonder Wallace is involved, he’s normally involved in everything good about West Brom going forward, and it is a devastating blow to Kieran McKenna and Ipswich.”

A devastating move

It was a goal that typifies the way Albion want to play at home. Strong and steady defensive play, keeping their shape and intercepting the oncoming attack, before keeping their composure and playing out between the lines to create a counter-attacking opportunity.

It was the culmination of two weeks of work following the defeat to Southampton, knowing they would face a difficult task against Ipswich who so often dominate their games, and knowing the best and most effective way to hurt them.

West Brom

From Townsend’s composure at the back, Wallace’s timing and decisiveness in the final third, and finally Diangana’s finish to put the game out of reach for the visitors, it was a perfect move for Corberan’s side and one they will be rightfully proud of.

Make no mistake, that is a huge win for West Brom, and one that will give them pride and belief going into any game this season, particularly at The Hawthorns, knowing they can come away with all three points.

In other West Brom news, a 9/10 star shone as one 5/10 was the only struggler in player ratings v Ipswich.
