West Brom star Darnell Furlong makes new Baggies playoff admission ahead of Cardiff clash

Darnell Furlong has revealed that there was plenty of confidence within West Brom before a game was played this season and the recent form has only boosted the positive mood at The Hawthorns.

After a difficult start to last season under Steve Bruce, the Baggies had an exceptional end to the campaign under the management of Carlos Corberan, eventually finishing ninth and three points outside of the playoff places.

That run of form under the Spaniard has given the group confidence that they can mount a serious top-six push this season according to Furlong, who believes that the Baggies are more than capable of doing something special this season.

As quoted by the Express & Star (28 November) he said: “There’s a massive confidence in the camp and it’s been there since the start of the season. It just reinforces what we believe in and it continues to try.

“Coming into this season we had a very positive end to last season – to tell the truth with our performances based on results we wasted the first 15 games of last season. To still finish three points off the playoffs after a 15-game head start is unbelievable.

“So coming into the season we thought if we could replicate what we did from then on it would look good. We’ll try to keep at it, there’s no guarantees but we will work hard.”

No guarantees

It is safe to say that heading into the start of the Championship campaign, the confidence that was obviously felt within the West Brom playing camp certainly wasn’t echoed by the supporters who were worried about what the season may hold.

The Baggies did finish last season strongly, but they were incredibly quiet over the summer transfer window leading to many fans looking at this season with some apprehension. However, with each passing week, Albion look like a more competitive outfit.

Beating Ipswich Town after the international break was a huge boost to West Brom’s playoff hopes and on Tuesday 28 November they face high-flying Cardiff City in a game which could well secure their place in the Championship top six for another few days.

Judging by Furlong’s comments, the players are confident that they can do something special this season but are still realistic that nothing is guaranteed at this stage of the campaign. If they can replicate this good form for the remainder of the season, West Brom have every chance of going one better than they did last season.
