West Brom transfer news: January recruitment update emerges in wake of new MSD Holdings loan

The latest West Brom loan taken out from MSD Holdings is not related “in any way” to recruitment ahead of the January transfer window, according to Birmingham Live.

The outlet reported on 2 December, ahead of the heartbreaking 2-1 loss to leaders Leicester, that the new money will certainly not be going towards any reinforcements for Carlos Corberan’s squad in the winter window.

It is currently unclear whether the Spaniard will be able to add anyone to the playing staff in the New Year as it has been highlighted that the financial situation remains tight around the wage bill despite the Baggies having had to “work hard” to bring costs down in the summer.

Despite exits, permanently or on loan, for the likes of Dara O’Shea and Karlan Grant, there were three additions to the squad and goalkeeper Alex Palmer is one who remained when a departure had been expected, so “as a result the picture is similar”.

Needs must

West Brom would surely not be taking out more loans secured against The Hawthorns or the training ground unless they absolutely had to so it is little surprise that the financial picture is still very tight heading in the transfer window.

It would hardly be a sustainable plan of action to have done so in order to fund player signings anyway even if that money wasn’t required for the day to day running of the club.

If the long-awaited takeover does get over the line in the next few weeks the picture could feasibly change in a big way, and potentially unlock a number of January options for Corberan and the recruitment department.

A recent update from The Telegraph’s John Percy (29 November) said that the intention was for the deal to be done “by January” so the situation looks changeable.

But as things stand it would appear to very much be a low-cost window if any incoming business is possible at all, unless players leave to free up space on the wage bill.

Corberan has done a wonderful job within those confines so far, notwithstanding the defeat on Saturday, but would surely love to be able to flesh out his squad in the coming weeks to back his promotion push.

In other West Brom news, an update has emerged after it appeared Corberan refused to shake hands with Enzo Maresca in the wake of Harry Winks’ dramatic winner.
