Carlos Corberan makes ‘difficult’ West Brom admission after what happened

Carlos Corberan has admitted it’s “difficult” to not overstretch players during demanding periods as West Brom prepare for the busy festive period.

Speaking to BirminghamLive on Tuesday (5 December), the Albion boss said he is going to have to ask more of the players again as his side are set to play seven games in 23 days over the next few weeks.

But after handing Matt Phillips a rest in the 1-0 victory over Cardiff City on 28 November to recover from a knock, he added that the versatile 32-year-old suffered the consequence of his injury and the busy schedule when he was forced off in the 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on Saturday (2 December).

“For me, the more difficult thing is sometimes you overstretch players in demanding periods because now we will play four games in a row with two days in between, depending on the squad you have you have to overstretch players and increase the possibility of injury,” said Corberan.

“Phillips has been injured and yet I made the decision at Cardiff to help him recover. One of the reasons was to keep growing with Jeremy Sarmiento, but at the same time, I know you need to make some rotation to avoid injuries.

“Even after giving the rest you suffer the consequence of the injury. That’s why you need adaptation, you don’t suffer frustration and we need to face the challenge how we need to, and that’s all.”

Challenging

There have been a number of challenges for Corberan to overcome during his time with West Brom and the injury situation is near the top of that list.

It’s been quite unbelieavble how many first-team players the Spaniard has been forced to work without as the injuries are beginning to pile up again.

The loss of Phillips against Leicester came after captain Jed Wallace picked up an issue against Cardiff that will keep him out for the next few weeks.

That means the Baggies manager is going to have to ask a number of players to dig deep over the next month as the fixtures are set to come thick and fast.

But Corberan has overcome adversity before this season and he will no doubt be ready for the challenge that lies ahead to keep his side in the promotion mix.
