Carlos Corberan must stay the course to usher in bright new era at West Brom after takeover development

Carlos Corberan is doing an excellent job at West Brom which could fuel plenty of interest from clubs in the Premier League but recent takeover developments suggest he must stay the course.

BBC Sport reported on 30 November that an “outright favourite” has emerged to complete the takeover of West Brom.

The broadcaster reported on its website on Thursday (30 November) that of the three reported potential bidders interested in acquiring the Baggies, one party has emerged and is understood to be the “outright favourite” in the race.

It had been reported that three parties from the United States were interested in buying the club, with a takeover now closer than ever before during Lai’s tenure with the price to acquire Albion set at around £60 million [Tom Collomosse, 15 November].

There had also been reports that parties from the Middle East were interested [Daily Mail, 20 September], but talks seem to be progressing positively, with the managing director Mark Miles confirming that non-disclosure agreements were in place (Albion Assembly Meeting Minutes, 12 October).

Things seem to finally be moving in the right direction at The Hawthorns but there is still a long way to go before there is a change of ownership to get the Baggies in a more positive place financially after a difficult few years.

The Baggies are certainly on a stunning upward trajectory under Corberan with the Spaniard certainly progressively moulding the club into strong promotion contenders.

Since his appointment, Corberan has won 26 of his 53 games as West Brom manager suggesting that he is certainly taking the club onto the right path back to the Premier League promised land.

However, there is the threat of several interested parties in the near future with a few clubs in the English top flight possibly looking for progressive coaches such as Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest.

Both clubs could certainly do with the Spaniard’s tactical nous and man-management qualities and the Baggies fans have tasted the threat of losing him before.

The former Huddersfield Town and Olympiacos boss had been strongly linked [Sky Sports, 7 February] with the vacant managerial post at Leeds United in February before their eventual relegation following the sacking of Jesse Marsch on but thankfully opted to sign a new deal to remain at Albion [7 February].

Corberan and the club’s decision was arguably the best one to come out of The Hawthorns this calendar year and the latest development regarding the potential takeover certainly emphasises that decision.

The 40-year-old managing in the Premier League is surely inevitable but West Brom must ensure they hand him all the tools necessary to make that expectation a fulfilment at B71 very soon.

Until then, Corberan will be tempted by potential offers elsewhere but the Spaniard must stay the course and build on the terrific job he’s already doing at The Hawthorns, fuelled by the prospective new owners. A bright new era is dawning at West Brom, and Corberan is a massive part of that.

In other West Brom news, Guochuan Lai appears to be very close to an exit from the Hawthorns amid a recent development involving a prospective takeover.
