Jonny Drury reacts to ‘devastating’ news as West Brom share Matt Phillips update

Journalist Jonny Drury has reacted to the “devastating” news that West Brom ace Matt Phillips is facing another spell on the sidelines.

As confirmed on Albion’s official website on Wednesday (6 December), Carlos Corberan expects Phillips to miss around four months of action.

It is yet another blow for the versatile midfielder, who sustained the hamstring injury in the 2-1 loss to Leicester City last weekend.

Reacting to the news on his personal Twitter account [6 December], Express & Star reporter Drury said: “Devastating for Phillips.”

Another lay-off

Phillips has featured in all 19 of Albion’s Championship matches this season, starting all but one of those.

That goes to highlight just how important he has been for Corberan, particularly when he can plug a number of gaps.

The 32-year-old is not exactly a spring chicken – he will be 33 by the time he returns – and this lay-off has come at a horrible time.

West Brom

Corberan needs all the players he can in the busiest month of the campaign to keep the Baggies on course for promotion to the Premier League.

Phillips is due to be out of contract at the end of the season, so it may well be that this brings an end to his time at The Hawthorns.

The former QPR winger also missed four months of last season and, unfortunately, he cannot be relied upon for a whole campaign.

For now, though, the most important thing is that Phillips makes a full recovery and hopefully plays a part in the final month of the season.

In other West Brom news, a rival manager admits he always makes it a priority to check Albion’s results.
