Tony Brown rages on BBC WM after ‘terrible’ incident in West Brom loss v Sunderland

Tony Brown was furious with the second goal West Brom conceded in their 2-1 defeat away at Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

Dan Neil netted in the 84th minute after a costly slip on the halfway line from Conor Towsend gifted the Black Cats a clear route to their goal.

Last week, Albion conceded a late winner for Leicester in similar circumstances and Baggies legend Brown couldn’t believe it pretty much happened again at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking on BBC Radio WM on Saturday (9 December, 02:18pm), Bomber Brown said: “It’s a massive slip from Townsend. He’s left one-on-one again and we saw it last week how they were left one-on-one and got punished. The same has happened this afternoon.

“It’s a poor goal from Albion’s point of view.

“They can’t afford to keep on doing this, they keep on getting caught at the back.”

Brown added: “It’s executed well from Sunderland’s point of view, he’s dinked the keeper but it’s terrible defending from Albion again.

“They can’t keep doing this. They can’t keep on leaving one-on-ones against the keeper. They’re killing themselves.”

How can West Brom concede another goal in such a similar fashion to the Harry Winks one last week against Leicester?

Granted, this one would not have happened if Townsend didn’t slip but still, you have to remain vigilant at the back otherwise you’re never going to see out tight games and grind out the points needed to stay in the top six.

Townsend’s already under fire from fans because his performances haven’t been up to scratch this season.

Matt Phillips’ long-term injury blow means Townsend is going to start most weeks and if his card is already marked, fans aren’t going to be so forgiving when he messes up in the way he did at the Stadium of Light this weekend.

It was unfortunate but it was a mistake made by a player who seemingly is low on confidence.

If he’s wearing the captain’s armband and playing in the defence every week, it’s not going to inspire teammates and could cause panic among the other defenders whenever he’s involved.

It’s so poor.

In other West Brom news, Guochuan Lai simply won’t give Corberan what he said he wants at The Hawthorns.
