Carlos Corberan frustrated with West Brom players after 1-1 draw v Stoke

Carlos Corberan was frustrated with his wingers and their lack of impact for West Brom as they stuttered to a 1-1 draw with Stoke City at The Hawthorns on 17 December.

The boss spoke out following the game, lamenting his wide men for their lack of creativity, and claiming they didn’t show enough determination to affect the game going forward.

Tom Fellows and Jed Wallace were handed opportunities to replace Grady Diangana and Jeremy Sarmiento out wide, and while Corberan suggested he was more pleased with their contribution, he was still unhappy overall.

Speaking to Birmingham Live following the game [18 December], Corberan ranted: “It was not difficult to progress on the sides and we did not progress with enough determination.

“It was enough times we received the ball to our wingers and we could’ve created something else and it’s true that it was Tom Fellows and Wallace the two players making more crosses than Grady and Sarmiento, who were playing on the sides.

“So for me, we should have created more from every single winger that was playing on the pitch.”

Players need to improve

The frustration was clear from Corberan, and he was right. An out-of-form Stoke side, without a manager, visiting The Hawthorns is the exact type of fixture West Brom need to step up and take all three points from if they want to make their Premier League dream a reality.

While they still occupy a playoff place, with three points separating them from seventh-placed Sunderland, every point counts with the table as tight as it is. Results like this are what the Baggies must avoid to secure their playoff place.

It may seem early for a reaction like this, to suggest every point is vital and they want to secure their place, but come the end of the season it’ll be the results like this, a home draw against a struggling side, that we look back on and question what went wrong.

The boss is right to be frustrated, and the players will need to step up and make sure they are at the top of their game in every match or risk the Spaniard’s wrath.
