Darnell Furlong now undroppable for Carlos Corberan after what he did v Stoke, West Brom contract extension must be given green light

West Brom are reportedly discussing behind the scenes several new contract extensions, and one must be handed to Darnell Furlong after recent displays.

Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman shared on 15 December that the Albion are currently holding internal talks over the possibility of extending the contracts of several key players at the club.

West Brom are currently discussing extending the contracts of players who have proven their worth to Carlos Corberan.

The report shared a list of several players who are just months away from expiring deals at the club, especially several youth prospects. Names include Tom Fellows, Alex Mowatt, Kyle Bartley and Reyes Cleary.

Chapman wrote: “It’s understood that the club are discussing the possibility of fresh agreements with certain players who have certainly proven their worth under Carlos Corberan.”

Given the number of players who are out of contract at The Hawthorns in June, it is certainly an area of pressing need for West Brom to address given the depleted squad already at Corberan’s disposal in comparison to their promotion rivals.

However, one player whose deal won’t be running out next year but certainly deserves an extension is Furlong who has been an ever-present for Corberan and arguably one of his best performers so far this season.

His latest display against Stoke on Sunday (17 December) should be deserving of talks being green-lighted despite the disappointing result.

Managerless Stoke earned a hard-fought point with a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns as West Brom missed the chance to strengthen their hold on the Championship playoff places after Brandon Thomas-Asante’s equaliser in the first half.

While Corberan may well be disappointed with the result, he certainly will be delighted at the performance of one of his most trusted lieutenants in 28-year-old senior star Furlong.

The Luton-born defender has enjoyed a fruitful campaign already, scoring twice and assisting once in 20 starts in the Championship [SofaScore] showcasing not only his defensive qualities but his influence in attack.

Against Stoke, the former Queens Park Rangers man was at his solid best, winning 85% of his ground duels, completing 78% of his passes, and 100% of his dribble attempts, whilst recording five clearances, two blocks and was dribbled past zero times. Furlong is surely now undroppable under Corberan.

The senior full-back’s contract doesn’t run out until 2025 but given his importance, leadership and consistent displays under the Spaniard, West Brom will be silly not to address his long-term future in the West Midlands.

Contract talks must be kicked off now.

In other West Brom news, Guochuan Lai appears to be very close to an exit from the Hawthorns amid a recent development involving a prospective takeover.
