Doctor addresses retirement claims on West Brom attacker Matt Phillips due to injury

We’re delighted to welcome injury expert Dr Rajpal Brar as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the injury situation at West Brom...

West Brom attacker Matt Phillips has not played the final game of his career and will not be retiring earlier, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert reports that his surgery is for him to ensure he returns to first-team action and the risk of re-injury is minimised.

Birmingham Live journalist Chris Lepkowski stated that he may not return to the Hawthorns, given he’s got four months left on his deal and hoped that it wasn’t the last the fans have seen of the 32-year-old.

Speaking exclusively with West Brom News about Phillips’ situation, Brar, a specialist in Physical Therapy and Sports Scientist, said:

It certainly could be his last match for the club based on the timeline suggested.

However, calling it career ending one is quite premature.

He has undergone surgery to help his return to football and there’s a very high probability he’s back in action.

The contract decision is the club’s but an early retirement does not seem likely at all.

This will certainly be a relief to everyone involved as nobody wants their swansong to arrive due to a serious injury.

Phillips was a regular for Carlos Corberan before his injury so it’s clear that the Spaniard rates his credentials as a player.

It remains to be seen if the Baggies offer him a new short-term deal or decide to part ways when his contract runs out in June 2024.

In other West Brom news, a near £7billion development may shape the club’s January plans with Carlos Corberan to be demanding.
