Conor Townsend reacts to West Brom fan frustrations with Carlos Corberan, shares ‘intimidating’ admission

Conor Townsend has called on the West Brom fans to stick with the team as he praised the atmosphere in the 1-0 victory over Norwich City on Tuesday (26 December).

Speaking to the Shropshire Star on Thursday (28 December), the 30-year-old said The Hawthorns is an “intimidating place to come” as Albion prepare to host Leeds United on Friday (29 December).

The left-back admitted that he knows the fans get “frustrated” sometimes with the football the Baggies play under Carlos Corberan, but he added that the playing style has been delivering success on the pitch as he called on the supporters to “trust the process”.

“Stick with us,” said Townsend. “We feel it when the fans are behind us and the Leicester game when we scored, the atmosphere was brilliant. Especially at home, being that loud, passionate voice means teams will struggle when they come here and it can be an intimidating place to come.

“I know fans get frustrated sometimes with how we can play from time to time in games, but other ways of playing were the same under other managers and the way we’re playing has good success.

“You look at the gaffer, from when he’s took over to now, we’re firmly in the playoffs as one of the top four, five teams. So it is working, you’ve got to trust the process of that and the fans have been great. We can’t win every game but if they get behind us, it really is that extra lift and it can be so important.”

Effective

It’s understandable that some fans may be a little bit frustrated with the style of football on offer, but Corberan is doing all he can to get the most out of his squad.

After a number of players left the Hawthorns over the summer and he’s had to put up with several injuries to key players this season, the Albion boss has done incredibly well to win as many games as he has.

While the football could be better, it’s just been about finding a way to win and it appears as though the players have bought into that.

If it comes to the end of the season and the Baggies have achieved promotion back to the Premier League, then there won’t be anyone complaining about how they achieved that goal.

Corberan will now be looking for a big performance from his side again as they look to make a statement against promotion rivals Leeds on Friday.
