Paul Merson stunned as Julian Warren shares ‘terrible’ West Brom verdict live on Sky Sports – ‘Wow’

Paul Merson was left stunned by a West Brom statistic he was told live on Sky Sports during Monday’s (1 January) clash with Swansea City.

Albion made the trip to South Wales aiming to improve on a poor record on the opening day of a calendar year.

Julian Warren mentioned on Sky Sports News [1 January, 03:48pm] that Albion have lost more games on New Year’s Day than any other side.

West Brom

“West Brom have a terrible record on New Year’s Day. They’ve lost 28 times on the first day of the new year – more than any other side,” he said.

In response to that, pundit Merson simply responded: “Wow”.

42-year wait

West Brom entered the Swansea game winless in their past 11 away league matches played on 1 January.

That run consisted of two draws and nine losses, stretching back to victory at Ipswich Town in 1972 – quite the wait.

What makes this NYD stat all the more remarkable is that only Manchester United (54) have won more games on Boxing Day than Albion (46).

West Brom

The Baggies tend to turn up on 26 December, but the complete opposite is true a week later on 1 January.

Quite why that has been the case down the years is anyone’s guess, but it really is a “terrible” record, as Julian Warren stated.

With a bit of luck, West Brom will have next year’s 1 January fixture moved to a different day for whatever reason so that this record is not added to.

In other West Brom news, a journalist has shared footage of a “very classy” gesture involving Albion supporters.
